Egypt giant Orascom Telecom was declared winner of a project to build & operate a new GSM mobile telephone network in Tunisia against $ 454 million fee. The fee is payable in two equal instalments, the first of which due upon signing the final contract with the Tunisian authorities. Orascom Telecom has outbid both Telephonica Co. ( of Spain ) & the National Mobile Telecommunication Co. ( of Kuwait ). Few weeks earlier, Orascom Telecom was declared winner for a similar scheme in Algeria . Orascom Telecom Chairman, Mr. Naguib Sawires, said his Group disposes on a clear strategy to become the first operator of GSM mobile telephone networks in the Arab world & the Middle East.
